    Application of PET RESIN YS-W01L

During two-stage injection stretch blow moulding of still water bottles, YS-W01L is dried in a desiccant unit with a dew point not exceeding -40 °C. Bed residence time is set between 4 h and 6 h, and granulate moisture is held below 50 ppm by Karl Fischer titration before melt processing. The resin is fed to a reciprocating screw preform injection machine with a 48-cavity or 72-cavity hot runner tool. Melt temperature is maintained at 265–280 °C, while hot runner nozzle tips are held at 270–285 °C. Injection pressure typically falls between 80 MPa and 110 MPa, with screw back pressure controlled at 3–6 MPa. The cold half of the tool uses chilled water at 8–12 °C. Preform intrinsic viscosity after injection, measured by ISO 1628-3, should not drop more than 0.03 dL/g below the certificate of analysis value. Residual acetaldehyde in the preform is specified below 3 mg/kg for still water contact and is determined by headspace gas chromatography per ASTM F2013. Preform scrap from start-up, gate flash, and out-of-spec cavities may be recompounded at not more than 20 wt% in virgin resin, provided the regrind is dried to the same moisture ceiling and its intrinsic viscosity is verified before batch release.

Blow moulding is performed on a rotary reheat machine with an infrared oven profile. Preform surface temperature before blowing is set between 100 °C and 115 °C, and blow pressure is typically 2.0–3.0 MPa for still water bottle sidewalls. Final bottle panels are drawn to a wall thickness of 0.20–0.28 mm for a 500 mL format. Drop impact is evaluated by ASTM D2463 after filling with chilled water, and top-load strength is verified to ASTM D2659 at not less than 220 N for empty 500 mL bottles. Food-contact compliance is established under FDA 21 CFR 177.1630 and EU 10/2011 Annex I. Specific migration of terephthalic acid, isophthalic acid, monoethylene glycol, and diethylene glycol is assessed by liquid chromatography with detection limits specified in EU 10/2011. Still water applications tolerate no visible haze increase after 24 h at 38 °C in accelerated storage. The low-acetaldehyde profile is the critical control point for this downstream track. Published data for YS-W01L in high-speed water lines with outputs above 45,000 bottles/h is limited, so line qualification trials are required before tooling release.

What limits carbonation retention in sidewall sections below 0.3 mm?

Carbonated soft drink containers demand a preform with sufficient molecular weight retention after injection, because sidewall orientation below 0.3 mm transfers mechanical stress directly to the base and lower panel. If the certificate of analysis reports an intrinsic viscosity below 0.80 dL/g by ISO 1628-3, YS-W01L should not be used for carbonation above 3.5 volumes without blending with a higher-IV post-condensation resin. Blending ratios between 10 wt% and 30 wt% of a 0.84 dL/g grade are commonly evaluated by capillary rheometry and preform IV measurement. Preform injection uses a melt temperature of 270–275 °C, and the preform is reheated to 100–110 °C before blow moulding. Longitudinal stretch ratio is set near 2.8:1, while hoop stretch ratio is set near 3.6:1. Stretch rod speed and pre-blow timing are adjusted so that the sidewall thickness distribution does not fall below 0.28 mm in the lower panel. Failure modes on production lines are dominated by base cracking, not sidewall bursting, when the preform IV is insufficient.

Carbon dioxide transmission through oriented PET is typically between 0.12 cm³·mm/m²·day·atm and 0.25 cm³·mm/m²·day·atm at 23 °C and 0% RH when measured by manometric instruments. Carbonation levels for soft drink bottles are commonly specified between 3.2 volumes and 4.2 volumes. Burst pressure testing on finished containers is conducted by pressurization at 1.0–1.2 MPa, while drop impact is measured on bottles filled and capped after carbonation equilibration. The limiting constraint is not short-term burst resistance but environmental stress cracking in the base and lower sidewall after carbonation expansion. If caustic preform washing is used on returnable or refillable CSD bottles, stress crack resistance must be verified by ASTM D543 exposure to dilute sodium hydroxide solutions. For YS-W01L, the operational boundary is clear: carbonation above 3.5 volumes is not supported by published data for this specific configuration, and conversion trials should include base geometry validation before commercial mould release.

    When hot-fill set-point reaches 87 °C in heat-set blow moulding

Heat-set blow moulding is used for high-acid juices, teas, and sports drinks filled at 85–90 °C. Unlike cold-fill processes, the preform is reheated to a higher surface temperature of 105–125 °C, and the blow mould is maintained at 120–145 °C with oil or electric heating. The stretch blow cycle is longer, with in-mould residence time of 2–4 s after final blow pressure of 3.0–4.0 MPa. This thermal history increases sidewall crystallinity to 30–35%, determined by ISO 11357-3 differential scanning calorimetry. Sidewall density rises to 1.370–1.380 g/cm³ when measured by a density gradient column per ISO 1183-1. The elevated crystallinity reduces thermal shrinkage but also reduces impact ductility, so panel radii and base ribbing must be designed with more conservative stress concentrations than in cold-fill containers. Bottle internal vacuum during cooling can reach 10–30 kPa depending on headspace and fill temperature. Vacuum panels are therefore engineered to absorb controlled deformation without label panel collapse.

Neck finish crystallisation is a separate operation in heat-set lines. Amorphous preform necks are heated to 180–200 °C for 2–5 min under rotating spindle support, producing a whitened crystalline neck finish with improved dimensional stability at fill temperatures. Top-load strength after hot filling is measured by ASTM D2659 and should not fall below 250 N for a 350 mL bottle. Thermal shrinkage of the sidewall is assessed by volume displacement after filling at 87 °C; acceptable shrink is typically below 3%. Food-contact compliance is established under FDA 21 CFR 177.1630 and EU 10/2011 Annex I. The operational boundary for YS-W01L in hot-fill conversion is determined by the blow mould temperature window. If mould temperature is below 120 °C, the required crystallinity may not be achieved. If mould temperature exceeds 145 °C, the container can stick or develop excessive surface haze. The grade is therefore suitable only when the blow moulder can hold a tight thermal window and neck crystallisation is independently controlled.

In extruded sheet manufacture for transparent food-contact trays, YS-W01L is often combined with edge trim and skeletal regrind from thermoforming. The resin is dried at 160–170 °C for 5–6 h in a desiccant unit with a dew point below -40 °C. Moisture must be held below 50 ppm, and when shop-floor relative humidity exceeds 60%, hopper inlet nitrogen purge or reduced open storage time is required. A twin-screw extruder with L/D 33:1 is used, followed by melt filtration through a screen changer. Melt temperature is controlled at 265–280 °C, and the flat die is held at 270–275 °C. Chill roll temperatures are set between 20 °C and 40 °C to produce amorphous sheet at gauges from 0.25 mm to 1.20 mm. Regrind addition is normally limited to 50 wt% in food-contact sheet. Higher regrind fractions increase the risk of hydrolysis-induced black specks and acetaldehyde carryover, especially if flake bulk density or drying hopper residence time is inconsistent.

Thermoforming is performed by plug-assisted forming at sheet surface temperatures of 110–130 °C. Mould temperature is maintained at 20–50 °C, depending on cycle time and part gloss. Draw ratios in tray forming are typically between 2:1 and 4:1. Tensile yield stress of amorphous PET sheet is verified by ASTM D638 and is normally in the range 50–60 MPa. Dart impact is measured by ASTM D1709, while haze is measured by ASTM D1003 and should remain below 5% for transparent tray applications. The terminal articles are refrigerated bakery trays, salad boxes, and modified atmosphere packaging trays. YS-W01L is not applicable to retort trays or hot-fill trays without heat-set sheet technology. Food-contact compliance is established under FDA 21 CFR 177.1630 and EU 10/2011 Annex I, with specific migration testing required for the finished tray because deep-draw orientation and regrind content change the surface-to-volume ratio.

Edible oil bottle preform injection and oxygen ingress control

Edible oil bottles are produced in formats from 1 L to 5 L, with sidewall thickness typically 0.4–0.7 mm. The preform injection process for YS-W01L follows the same drying and melt discipline as still water conversion, but cycle times are longer because of the heavier preform weight and thicker walls. Preform cooling is maintained at 8–12 °C to avoid crystalline haze in the gate area. Blow moulding uses a two-stage reheat system with preform surface temperature near 100–110 °C. In handled formats, the blow mould contains movable inserts that form a pinch handle without creating microcracks at the parting line. The terminal article is a 1 L or 1.8 L edible oil bottle with a screw neck finish, typically 29/25 or similar, and the package weight is generally between 30 g and 50 g for 1 L formats. Top-load strength is measured by ASTM D2659 after filling and capping, and drop impact is measured by ASTM D2463 on filled bottles.

Oxygen ingress is the dominant technical limit for edible oil packaging. Oxygen transmission through oriented PET at 23 °C and 50% RH is typically 0.08–0.20 cm³·mm/m²·day·atm when measured by ASTM D3985. This is not an oxygen barrier sufficient for long shelf-life of high-linoleic oils unless a barrier layer or oxygen scavenger is included. Unmodified YS-W01L should therefore be assigned to oil packaging where the distribution chain is short or where peroxide value limits are not exceeded during the intended shelf-life. Published data for YS-W01L in oil bottles with active barrier layers is limited, so co-injection or coating trials must be separately validated. Food-contact compliance is established under FDA 21 CFR 177.1630 and EU 10/2011 Annex I. The critical process variable is not melt temperature but the consistency of sidewall orientation, because uneven stretching creates local thin spots where oxygen transmission rises above the quoted range.

Home-care conversion tolerates regrind above 25 wt% only with viscosity auditing

Clear bottles for dishwashing liquids, surface cleaners, and trigger spray applications are produced from bottle-grade PET, but the conversion route differs from beverage bottles because the neck dimensions and sidewall weight are driven by closure and pump fitments rather than carbonation. Two-stage stretch blow moulding is used with preform surface temperature at 95–105 °C, blow mould temperature at 8–12 °C, and blow pressure at 2.0–3.0 MPa. Melt temperature in preform injection is kept between 260 °C and 270 °C to limit acetaldehyde generation, because home-care containers are not low-acetaldehyde articles. Regrind content can be increased from 25 wt% to 50 wt% when post-consumer or post-industrial flake is sorted, washed, and dried to below 50 ppm moisture. Each recycle pass reduces intrinsic viscosity by 0.02–0.05 dL/g when measured by ISO 1628-3, so viscosity auditing of the blended feed is mandatory at the slip and bulk stage.

Environmental stress cracking is the main failure mode. The finished bottles are tested by ASTM D543 with surfactant solutions based on linear alkylbenzene sulfonate at 5 wt% and stored at 38 °C for 7 days. Crazing, turbidity, or pin-hole leakage at the base and neck shoulder is cause for rejection. The terminal article is a trigger spray bottle with a 28/400 or 28/410 neck finish, often with a sidewall thickness of 0.30–0.45 mm. Food-contact compliance is not always required, but if the container is used for food-adjacent cleaning or food-service sanitizer applications, FDA 21 CFR 177.1630 and EU 10/2011 apply. The operational boundary is set by the heat history of regrind. Above 50 wt% recycled content, the preform IV and melt viscosity become too variable for consistent blow moulding without melt-phase chain extension or blending with virgin high-IV resin.
