    Application of PET CHIPS YS-C02

When YS-C02 is specified for carbonated soft drink preform production, the first processing constraint is moisture content below 30 ppm prior to injection, because residual water induces hydrolytic chain scission and elevates carboxyl end-group concentration in the hot runner. Drying is executed in a desiccant wheel dryer with supply air dew point below -40°C, hopper temperature maintained at 165–175°C, and total residence time between 4 h and 6 h; when plant relative humidity exceeds 60%, the hopper throat is blanketed with dried air to prevent moisture re-uptake. The injection unit is a reciprocating screw with L/D ratio no shorter than 24:1 and a compression ratio of 2.5:1; barrel temperatures are profiled from 270°C at the feed throat to 285°C at the metering zone, and the hot runner manifold is held below 285°C to limit acetaldehyde generation. In carbonated soft drink applications, acetaldehyde in the preform is controlled below 3 mg/kg (3 ppm) as measured by ASTM F2013-17, because headspace migration into the beverage produces detectable off-taste at higher values. Intrinsic viscosity retention is confirmed by ASTM D4603-18 and ISO 1628-5; bottle-grade YS-C02 entering with 0.80–0.85 dL/g is typically accepted with a preform IV above 0.79 dL/g to maintain burst strength. Representative bottle-grade PET control envelopes are used here; the supplier’s certificate of analysis for YS-C02 should be consulted for the exact IV and DEG limits. Food-contact compliance is evaluated under FDA 21 CFR 177.1630, EU 10/2011, and EC 1935/2004, with antimony-specific migration not exceeding 0.04 mg/kg in the food simulant assigned under EU 10/2011 Annex I, Table 1. The compounding recipe is based on 100 wt% virgin YS-C02 or a blend of 75–100 wt% YS-C02 with 0–25 wt% post-consumer food-grade recycled PET that meets the same EU 10/2011 dual-use requirements; post-industrial regrind from heat-set hot-fill scrap is limited to 5 wt% because residual crystallinity seeds haze in CSD preforms. Acetaldehyde scavenger is compounded at 0.02–0.06 wt%, and blue tone masterbatch is added at 0.10–0.20 wt% to control b* chromaticity. The injection-moulded preform is reheat stretch blow moulded at a surface temperature of 100–120°C, axial stretch ratio between 2.0 and 2.5, hoop stretch ratio between 2.5 and 3.0, and blow pressure of 30–40 bar. At production scale, preforms exceeding 8 min total residence time in the hot runner manifold exhibit measurable intrinsic viscosity loss and increased cycle rejection due to crystallinity haze; colour shift in the gate vestige is a visible indicator of thermal degradation, and hot runner balance above 1.5% inter-cavity fill variation creates burn streaks in the fastest cavities. The terminal finished products are single-serve and family-size bottles from 500 ml to 2 L for carbonated soft drinks, with carbonation retention dependent on sidewall thickness and carbon dioxide barrier regime.

What Limits Lightweighting in Still Water Preforms Made from YS-C02?

Lightweighting trials on 250 ml to 1.5 L still water preforms encounter two opposing constraints: reducing sidewall weight raises axial top-load limits but lowers preform melt strength and increases sensitivity to gate crystallinity. The downstream process for YS-C02 begins with the same drying threshold as CSD, but barrel setpoints are biased toward the lower end of the PET window, usually 270–278°C, to suppress acetaldehyde formation below 2 mg/kg (2 ppm) in the preform as measured by ASTM F2013-17. Intrinsic viscosity is controlled by ISO 1628-5 and ASTM D4603-18; preform IV after injection is normally held between 0.76 dL/g and 0.82 dL/g for lightweight configurations. Industry compliance for potable water contact in the finished bottle is assessed under FDA 21 CFR 177.1630, EU 10/2011, and EC 1935/2004, with antimony-specific migration below 0.04 mg/kg in food simulant as provided by EU 10/2011 Annex I, Table 1. In terms of formulation, YS-C02 is charged at 100 wt% as the virgin fraction, with reheat-enhancing masterbatch at 0.05–0.15 wt% when two-stage ovens show insufficient infrared absorption in thin preform walls. The preform injection hardware runs high-cavitation moulds from 72 to 128 cavities, and the hot runner manifold is balanced to keep inter-cavity fill variation below 1.5%. Reheat stretch blow moulding is performed on linear machines running 1,800–2,400 bottles per cavity per hour; preform surface temperature distribution is measured with a pyrometer across the preform length, and the neck region is shielded from infrared heating to prevent ovalisation. Terminal finished products include still water bottles from 250 ml to 1.5 L with neck finishes such as 30/25 and 29/25, where top-load retention after empty filling is above 50 N for a 500 ml container.

Thermoforming Crystallinity and Plug Assist Design with Bottle-Grade PET

Across amorphous PET sheet extrusion lines, bottle-grade YS-C02 is used when converters maintain a single high-IV resin inventory for both bottle and sheet output. The primary compliance framework for food trays and clamshells is FDA 21 CFR 177.1630 for the base polymer and EU 10/2011 for overall migration into food simulants such as 3% acetic acid, 10% ethanol, and 20% ethanol, depending on the food type. For APET sheet, the resin fraction can be 70–100 wt% YS-C02 blended with 0–30 wt% in-house regrind from edge trim or post-industrial recycled PET; because bottle-grade PET has higher IV than typical sheet-grade PET, regrind addition must be limited to avoid excessive die pressure. Processing aids and slip/antiblock concentrates are added at 0.05–0.30 wt% for flat sheet, and colour concentrates at 0.10–0.80 wt% for tinted meat trays. The downstream production process passes melt through a single-screw extruder with L/D 30:1 to 36:1, melt filter at 40–60 µm, and an extrusion die feeding a vertically stacked three-roll polishing unit. The critical process conflict arises from bottle-grade PET’s crystallisation kinetics: if sheet surface temperature during thermoforming falls below 90°C or exceeds 115°C, plug assist marks and stress-whitening appear at the base corners, and the crystallinity generated in the transition region reduces impact strength. Plug assist speed is set between 200 mm/s and 500 mm/s, with mould temperature 20–60°C, and the sheet is heated by ceramic infrared elements to a surface temperature of 95–110°C. Terminal products include transparent APET trays, clamshells, and bakery containers in the thickness range 0.25–1.00 mm.

Thick-walled packaging for viscous personal care formulations routes YS-C02 toward injection blow moulding rather than reheat stretch blow moulding to preserve wall distribution in containers with short, thick parisons. Food-contact and packaging compliance is confirmed under FDA 21 CFR 177.1630 for the base PET, EU 10/2011 for plastic packaging, and REACH Regulation (EC) No 1907/2006 for substance restrictions; cosmetic product compatibility is assessed according to the finished packaging supplier’s odour and migration protocol rather than EC 1223/2009, which governs the filled cosmetic formula. The base resin composition uses 100 wt% virgin YS-C02, with precoloured PET masterbatch at 0.3–1.0 wt% for opaque high-gloss finishes and pearlescent effect concentrate at 0.5–2.0 wt% for decorated vanity sets. The manufacturing process involves drying to below 30 ppm moisture, injection of a thick preform with a barrel temperature profile from 265°C to 280°C, and blowing at lower stretch ratios than beverage preforms because wall thickness targets are 1.5–4.0 mm in the shoulder and base regions. One production-scale failure mode is gate blush inside the preform, caused by excessive injection speed; the corrective action is reducing peak injection speed below 60 mm/s and increasing holding pressure until gate freeze. Another bottleneck is preform reheat unevenness across a short, thick parison, which leads to hook-shaped thickness variation in the blown body if infrared emitter zones are not rebalanced. Published data for YS-C02 in this exact cosmetic packaging configuration is limited, but the processing envelope follows standard injection blow moulding practice. Terminal finished product categories include 50 ml to 500 ml bottles and jars for shampoos, body lotion, hair conditioners, and compact powder cases.

When Heat Setting in the Blow Mould Creates Positive Internal Pressure Resistance

If YS-C02 is processed in heat-set blow moulds at 140–160°C, the thermal stabilisation step differentiates its behaviour from conventional ambient-fill bottle preforms. The compliance matrix includes FDA 21 CFR 177.1630, EU 10/2011, and ISO 1133-1:2022 for melt mass-flow rate verification across resin lots; preforms intended for hot-fill also require acetaldehyde control under ASTM F2013-17 because residual AA migrates into juice and tea matrices more actively at elevated filling temperatures. Formulation proportions for hot-fill use 100 wt% YS-C02 when IV is at least 0.84 dL/g; for lower-IV lots, converters blend 20–40 wt% of a heat-stabilised PET grade to maintain sidewall crystallinity above 35% after heat setting. Acetaldehyde scavenger is added at 0.03–0.06 wt%, and reheat masterbatch is maintained at 0.05–0.10 wt% because the hot-fill preform wall is thicker than a standard water preform. Downstream production proceeds through injection moulding at 272–285°C, followed by reheat stretch blow moulding in a heat-set mould operating at 140–160°C; blow air is introduced at 30–40 bar, and mould dwell time is extended by 1–2 s relative to ambient-fill bottles to build sidewall crystallinity. The key process conflict is vacuum collapse after cooling: if sidewall crystallinity falls below 35% and the panelised geometry is not correctly matched to the hot-fill shrink volume, the bottle body deforms inward. Production-scale failure indicators include 4–8% deformation at the shoulder and base, visible cloudiness from spherulitic crystal growth, and top-load loss greater than 15% after filling. Terminal products include 300 ml to 1 L hot-fill bottles for juices, teas, and isotonic drinks, where the design must withstand internal negative pressure after capping without external vacuum panel failure.

Edible Oil Packaging Demands Organoleptic Neutrality

For long-shelf-life edible oil containers, YS-C02 is selected where lipid contact at ambient or warehouse-elevated temperatures tests the low-migration characteristics of PET. Compliance for oil contact is confirmed under FDA 21 CFR 177.1630, EU 10/2011, and EC 1935/2004; the food simulant for oily foods under EU 10/2011 is vegetable oil or 95% ethanol, and the overall migration limit is 10 mg/dm². The base formulation for transparent oil bottles uses 100 wt% virgin YS-C02 because the base polymer has low aldehyde generation and a clean carboxyl end-group profile; UV-blocking masterbatch is optionally added at 0.02–0.05 wt% for packing oils sensitive to light-induced oxidation, and blue toner is added at 0.05–0.10 wt% only when colour neutrality is required in a transparent shoulder. Downstream production uses injection reheat stretch blow moulding with a higher degree of axial orientation in the neck and handle regions, since oil bottles must support pour weights up to 5 L; preform injection temperatures are held at 272–282°C, and blowing surface temperature is held at 100–115°C. A critical limitation in oil packaging is not gas barrier but organoleptic neutrality: PET with elevated acetaldehyde releases aldehyde into the oil headspace, so preform AA is controlled below 2 mg/kg under ASTM F2013-17. Terminal products include 250 ml to 5 L edible oil bottles for soybean, sunflower, and corn oil, with neck finishes specified by the filling line capper type.
